What is the difference between collagen injections and filler?
Director Kim Serim ·
Filler uses hyaluronic acid gel to create volume immediately, in proportion to the amount injected. Collagen injections deliver collagen itself or ingredients that help collagen production, so the skin fills in on its own over several weeks. If you need a precisely defined shape, filler fits better. If you want to fill a wide area naturally or also improve skin texture, collagen injections fit better.

They work differently
Filler creates volume exactly where the hyaluronic acid gel is placed. Results are visible right away and the shape can be finely adjusted. That makes it well suited to areas that need a defined line, such as the nose tip, chin, or under-eye border. Another advantage is that it can be corrected with a dissolving injection if needed.
Collagen injections work slightly differently depending on the ingredient. Pure collagen such as Retigen replenishes collagen directly. PDLLA products such as Juvelook Volume stimulate the body to make new collagen. So the area usually fills in gradually from around week 4, and skin texture and firmness often improve as well.
They also last in different ways. Filler is slowly absorbed over time. With collagen injections, even after the ingredient is absorbed, the collagen made in the meantime often remains, so the change continues. In both cases, however, how long results last varies widely with the area, the amount, and lifestyle.
Which one to choose, and when?
The question we hear most in clinic is "Which one is better?" The answer depends on the area and the result you want. For thin skin such as around the eyes, we mainly recommend Retigen or Colshine. For broadly hollow cheeks and the area around the nasolabial folds, we mainly recommend Juvelook Volume.
- When filler fits: when shape and lines need to be precise, such as the chin, nose, or under-eye border, or when you want to see results right away
- When collagen injections fit: when you want to fill a wide area naturally, such as the front cheeks, side cheeks, or temples, or when you're concerned about filler feeling foreign
- Using both: collagen injections for hollow areas and filler where a line is needed, planned separately
Things to keep in mind
Both procedures can cause swelling, bruising, or lumps at the injection site, and rarely, vascular complications. Collagen injections are often given in divided sessions at intervals rather than all at once, so we adjust the amount while watching the results.
Serene Clinic uses genuine products in the stated amounts as a rule, and we do not recommend more than you need.
Right after the procedure, the injection sites may feel slightly bumpy. With collagen injections, you may be asked to massage the area so the ingredient spreads evenly, so please follow the aftercare instructions.

Frequently asked questions
How long do collagen injections last?
It depends on the ingredient and area, but volume that builds up gradually often lasts longer than filler. The exact duration varies from person to person.
Can I get collagen injections where I've had filler?
It's often possible, but we decide after checking the type and amount of your previous filler.
What if I want to see results right away?
Collagen injections show changes over several weeks, so if you need volume right away, filler is more suitable.
