Xerf 300 shots vs 600 shots: what's the difference, and how do I choose?

Director Kim Serim ·

With Xerf, more shots is not automatically better. What matters is which areas are treated and how densely. To refine specific areas such as the jawline, deep cheeks, or double chin, 300 shots is often suitable. When overall facial firmness has declined or the skin is thick, 600 shots, which allows enough time for heat to stay in the tissue, is often a better fit.

What kind of lifting is Xerf?

Xerf is a monopolar RF device from Lutronic that uses two frequencies, 6.78MHz and 2MHz, together. 6.78MHz works on collagen regeneration and firmness in the dermis, while 2MHz sends heat to deeper layers and addresses contour and sagging. Rather than focusing heat on one point, it heats a wide area evenly.

During treatment, ICD cooling continuously cools the skin surface, and the device reads skin impedance to adjust the energy. So it can send heat deep without overheating the surface, and the pain burden tends to be lower.

Choosing between 300 and 600 shots

With RF lifting, temperature and time work together. Collagen begins to remodel only when a certain temperature is maintained for a certain time. The more shots, the longer heat stays in the same area, so an adequate response can be expected even at a relatively lower temperature.

Conversely, even with the same 300 shots, concentrating them on the areas that need it rather than spreading them across the whole face secures more heat and time per unit area. That's why placement matters more than the number of shots.

  • 300 shots: when you want to focus on specific areas such as the jawline, deep cheeks, or double chin. Well suited to people in their late 20s to early 30s whose firmness hasn't declined much yet.
  • 600 shots: when overall loss of facial firmness or sagging is the concern, when the skin is thick or sagging has progressed, or when high heat is hard to tolerate.
  • A 600-shot tip can be split into 300 shots each, so you can also divide it into two sessions and treat by area.

Why results differ even with the same shot count

In a 2026 animal study by a Lutronic research team, similar total energy (about 1,900J) was delivered under the same conditions. Yet delivering energy spot by spot (stamping) produced a greater temperature rise in the deep layers, while moving the handpiece (sliding) produced a higher surface temperature.

This doesn't mean one method is always better. It means that even with the same Xerf 600 shots, heat distribution in the tissue differs depending on the depth and technique used. That is why planning before treatment matters.

Combining with Ulthera

Ulthera uses ultrasound to create small thermal coagulation points at specific depths, while Xerf uses radiofrequency to heat a wide area. Because they work in different ways and on different layers, for faces with both fascia-layer sagging and laxity of the skin itself, we sometimes plan both devices on the same day.

In a study of 24 Korean patients published in Dermatologic Surgery in 2025, improvement was observed with both treatment orders when monopolar RF and focused ultrasound were combined. It was done with different devices, so it can't be applied directly, but it serves as a reference for understanding the combined approach. If needed, we first check fat thickness and left–right differences with ultrasound before treatment and divide the emphasis accordingly.

Results, duration, and aftercare

Some people feel firmer right after, but collagen regeneration progresses over 1–3 months and is most noticeable at months 2–6. Results usually last 6–12 months, depending on skin condition and lifestyle. At first, we may recommend one more session after 3 months, which we decide at consultation based on your response.

After treatment, take care with sun protection and moisturizing, and avoid alcohol and smoking on the day. Rarely, redness or swelling may last about a day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xerf really painless?

It isn't painless. Thanks to cooling, it mostly feels warm, but areas where energy goes deep, such as the jaw and cheeks, may feel slightly zappy. We adjust the intensity while watching your response during treatment.

What if 300 shots isn't enough?

After seeing the results, we add shots to the areas that need more or adjust the shot count at the next session. We don't increase it excessively from the start.

Can I wear makeup right after treatment?

In most cases, yes. If there is redness, please use low-irritation products.
