Why can mole removal leave a dent, and what helps prevent it?
Director Kim Serim ·
A dent after mole removal tends to form when mole cells reach deep into the dermis and are removed all the way down in one session, or when the wound dries out and the scab comes off too early. Removing the mole in thin layers with a CO2 laser, treating deep moles in stages 1–2 months apart, and keeping up moist dressings and sun protection can lower the risk of dents and pigmentation. Some marks may still remain depending on the skin and the depth of the mole.
At a glance
- How it works
- A CO2 laser vaporizes mole tissue in thin layers
- Before treatment
- Moles that are asymmetric or have changed in color or size need a biopsy before any laser
- Sessions
- Shallow moles usually 1 session; deep moles may need another session 1–2 months later
- Recovery
- 1–2 weeks for new skin to form; redness can last weeks to months
- Aftercare
- Moist dressing, no picking at scabs, sun protection
- Price
- From 10,000 KRW per mole (as of the November 2026 menu)
Why does the spot sometimes dent after a mole is removed?
A dent after mole removal usually forms when the dermis is removed too deeply or too widely. A mole is a cluster of pigment-producing nevus cells. In some moles these cells sit only in the shallow layers of skin. In others they root deep into the dermis.
Flat brown moles usually have cells at the junction of the epidermis and dermis, so shallow removal is enough. Raised moles, or older moles that have faded toward skin color, often have cells spread deep into the dermis. If such a mole is taken all the way down in one go, the skin cannot refill the lost dermis and a hollow mark remains.
Wound care also matters. When a wound dries into a hard scab, new skin grows more slowly. Pulling the scab off early exposes a base that has not filled in yet, and it can set as a dent.
Should the mole be checked before removal?
Before laser removal, the mole should first be assessed to confirm it is benign. A laser destroys the tissue, so after treatment there is nothing left to examine under a microscope.
Be cautious with moles that are asymmetric, have blurry or irregular borders, contain several colors, are larger than 6 mm across, or have changed in size, color or height over recent months. The same goes for moles that bleed or itch, and new brown spots on the palms, soles or under the nails.
If Serene Clinic sees these features, we do not remove the mole by laser. Instead, we guide you to a medical facility that can perform a biopsy first. Most moles are benign, but the rule is never to burn away a mole that needs checking for cosmetic reasons.
How does Serene Clinic remove moles?
Serene Clinic removes moles with a CO2 laser that vaporizes the tissue one thin layer at a time. After each layer, we check for remaining pigment and stop at the depth needed.
Because the laser targets only the mole, the surrounding normal skin is left alone as much as possible. Numbing cream is applied beforehand, and small moles take only a few minutes. You may feel some stinging, and the level of discomfort varies from person to person.
For deep moles, we do not push all the way to the bottom in the first session. We remove only as deep as the skin can heal well, and if color shows again after recovery, we treat it then. This may take more sessions than doing it all at once, but it is better for reducing dents.
What if the mole comes back?
Color returning at the site means nevus cells left deep in the skin are making pigment again. This is more common with deep moles and does not mean the treatment was done wrong.
Whether to retreat is decided after the wound has fully healed and the redness has settled somewhat, usually 1–2 months later. Using the laser again on skin that has not healed raises the risk of scarring.
Brown post-inflammatory pigmentation after removal is often mistaken for the mole coming back. This pigmentation usually fades over a few months, so we tell the two apart at a visit before deciding on treatment.
How should I care for the skin after removal?
The key to aftercare is keeping the wound moist and covered, and protecting it from the sun. Serene Clinic applies a moist dressing containing EGF (Jaeshenk) or a hydrocolloid patch to keep the wound from drying out.
In the first few days, the area may be red, itchy or slightly swollen, which is mostly part of normal healing. If pain keeps getting worse, pus or warmth appears, or the redness spreads, it may be an infection, so please contact us right away.
- Wash gently with lukewarm water and do not rub the treated area.
- Keep the dressing on for the period you were told, and let any scab fall off on its own.
- Avoid alcohol, saunas and sweaty workouts for the first few days.
- Keep using sunscreen for about 3 months, even after new skin has formed.
When is it better to postpone mole removal?
If you tend to form keloids, where scars swell and grow, please tell us before removal. On keloid-prone areas such as the chest, shoulders and jawline, we first decide together whether the mole really needs to be removed.
If there is inflamed acne or eczema at the site, if you have recently tanned heavily, or if you have a trip with lots of sun coming up soon, pigmentation is more likely to remain, so it is better to adjust the timing.
If you have an important event such as a wedding or a photo shoot, remove the mole at least 3–4 weeks ahead. That gives enough time for redness to fade to a level that makeup can cover.

Frequently asked questions
Can raised moles be removed by laser too?
Yes. Raised moles often have cells deep in the dermis, so to reduce denting we may remove them in stages instead of all at once.
Can several moles be removed at once?
Small moles can be removed together. With many moles, though, there are more wounds to care for, so we sometimes split treatment based on the overall healing load on the face.
When can I wear makeup?
Once new skin has covered the area and there is no more oozing, usually around 1 week. Before then, apply makeup only over the dressing and avoid rubbing the treated area.
Is it okay to remove moles in summer?
Yes. Sun exposure makes pigmentation more likely, so dressing and sun protection need extra care. If you have many outdoor plans, it is better to adjust the timing.
Will a mole never come back once removed?
Shallow moles usually do not return, but with deep moles color can come back from remaining cells. In that case, we consider another session after healing is complete.
