Will I get scabs after laser for freckles and lentigines?
Director Kim Serim ·
It depends on which treatment you get. Toning, which brightens the overall facial tone, rarely causes scabs, so you can go to work right away. Removal procedures that target lentigines or dark freckles one by one leave small scabs at each spot, which fall off after about 5–7 days.

Toning and removal have different goals
Toning applies low energy evenly across the whole face to gradually lighten widespread pigment. It causes almost no wounds on the skin surface, so the skin is only slightly red right after, and this usually subsides within 1–2 hours.
In contrast, for well-defined lentigines, dark freckles, and moles, it is effective to apply strong energy only to that spot to break up the pigment at once. In this case, a thin scab forming at the spot is a normal part of healing.
Even if they look like the same brown spots, freckles, lentigines, melasma, and post-inflammatory pigmentation differ in cause and depth. The type of pigment determines whether you need a treatment that causes scabs or whether toning alone is enough.
If scabs form, how long do they last?
Small scabs after removal usually fall off on their own in 5–7 days. The spot looks pinkish for a while, then returns to the surrounding skin color over several weeks.
Picking off scabs or getting sun exposure can cause pigmentation. Apply regenerative ointment and wait until they fall off. If needed, you can apply skin-colored patches and wear makeup.
For 2–3 weeks after the scab falls off, the spot may temporarily darken. It usually fades with sun protection and brightening care, and if it lasts, we can help with toning or medication.
If you work full time, try planning like this
At Serene Clinic, we first identify the type and depth of pigment before treatment. Strong removal treatment on melasma can actually make it darker, so choosing the right method for each type of pigment is most important.
- If you want treatment without taking time off: start with toning to even out the overall tone
- If you want lentigines and moles gone quickly: get removal before a weekend or holiday
- If you need both: an all-in-one program that combines toning and spot removal in one session
Aftercare
- On the day of treatment, avoid alcohol, saunas, and strenuous exercise.
- Apply moisturizer often, and reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours for one week.
- Don't rub scabs or red areas, and don't use exfoliants.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear makeup right after toning?
Yes, in most cases right away. If there is redness, please use low-irritation products.
Can I wear makeup where scabs form?
Light makeup is fine as long as you don't rub over the scabs. Skin-colored patches make them easier to cover.
Will everything go away in one session?
Lentigines and moles lighten a lot in one session, but some need additional treatment. Freckles are often treated over several sessions.
