Why Does a Double Chin Thread Lift Show Results Right Away, and Which Double Chins Does It Suit?

Director Kim Serim ·

A double chin thread lift uses the barbs of dissolvable threads to catch loose tissue under the chin and support it upward, so the jawline changes from the day of treatment. It works best for a sagging-type double chin caused by loose skin and tissue. For a fat-type double chin with thick fat, the fat should be reduced first or the thread lift planned together with other treatments for a natural result.

At a glance

How it works
Dissolvable cog threads (threads with barbs) support tissue under the chin; collagen forms around the threads as they dissolve
Best suited for
Sagging-type double chin caused mainly by loose skin and tissue, without much fat
When you see change
Jawline changes from the same day, settles in 1–2 weeks as swelling goes down
Recovery
Daily life right away; swelling and bruising 3–4 days, tightness 1–2 weeks
Duration
About 6 months to 1 year depending on thread type (varies by person)

Do all double chins have the same cause?

No. Double chins fall broadly into a fat type and a sagging type, and many people have a mix of both. Different causes call for different treatments, so if you are considering a double chin thread lift, the first step is to see which type you are closer to.

In the fat type, the fat under the chin has thickened and the area between the chin and neck looks rounded and full. It is closely tied to body weight and is common even at a younger age. In the sagging type, the skin and the fascia beneath it loosen with age and the tissue under the chin drops down. This becomes more common after 40. A sagging-type double chin can also appear after major weight loss, when leftover skin hangs loose.

Other factors can also look like a double chin: a short or receding chin, a forward head posture, or drooping salivary glands. A thread lift does not change these, so we check for them during the consultation.

How can I tell the fat type from the sagging type?

You can get a rough idea in front of a mirror. Hold your head level and pinch the skin under your chin between your thumb and index finger. If you grab a thick handful, you are closer to the fat type. If what you pinch is thin, but gently drawing the skin below your jawline back toward your ears with both hands makes your neckline look clean, you are closer to the sagging type.

If your jawline looks well defined in the second test, a double chin thread lift can give a similar kind of change. If thick tissue still remains when you lift, that is a sign threads alone will not be enough.

This self-check is only a guide. In the clinic, we look at skin thickness and elasticity, the amount and location of fat, and whether neck muscle bands appear before deciding on a treatment.

Why does a double chin thread lift work so quickly?

A double chin thread lift shows change quickly because the threads physically hold the tissue and reposition it. Unlike lasers or radiofrequency, where you wait months for new collagen to form, the contour under the chin changes the moment the threads are placed and the tissue is lifted.

Dissolvable cog threads are placed so that they run across the area under the chin and up to behind both ears. The barbs on the thread surface catch the loose tissue, and the thread ends are anchored in the relatively tough fascia behind the ears. Because the whole area under the chin is supported like a sling, it helps reduce the feeling of being pulled on one side only.

As the threads dissolve over several months, collagen forms in the surrounding tissue, which helps maintain firmness. So a double chin thread lift combines an immediate change with a gradual one. The number and direction of threads are chosen based on how much sagging there is and the width of the face.

When is a thread lift alone not enough?

For a fat-type double chin with thick fat under the chin, a thread lift alone is not enough. Threads move tissue but do not reduce fat, so lifting thick fat as it is can make the area below the jawline look bunched. In this case, we suggest reducing the fat first with fat-dissolving injections, then addressing the remaining sagging with threads.

When the skin is very thin and severely loose, there is a limit to how much the threads can hold. Results may be short-lived or the threads may show through. If sagging is severe, surgical options may need to be discussed.

If sagging is still mild and overall skin elasticity has simply declined, radiofrequency or ultrasound lifting may come before threads. Radiofrequency lifting such as Xerf warms the skin under the chin and along the jawline over a wide area to support firmness, and it is sometimes planned together with a thread lift at a different time.

What is the procedure and recovery like?

A double chin thread lift takes about 30 minutes after anesthesia. There is no incision, only small entry points for the needle or cannula. You can return to daily life the same day.

Swelling and bruising usually show for 3–4 days and then gradually fade. For the first 1–2 weeks you may feel tightness when turning your head or opening your mouth wide; this usually eases as the threads settle. During this time, avoid suddenly tilting your head far back or turning it sharply, intense exercise, saunas, and massaging under the chin.

Rarely, the skin may look dimpled, thread ends may be felt, or infection or asymmetry may occur. Contact us right away if one side becomes very swollen, painful, or warm. If you take blood thinners or are pregnant, be sure to tell us during the consultation.

How long do results last, and will I need it again?

A double chin thread lift lasts about 6 months to 1 year, depending on the type of thread and skin condition, and varies by person. Some of the collagen formed in the meantime remains after the threads dissolve, but aging and weight changes continue to have an effect.

Once that period has passed, we reassess the sagging and decide whether to repeat the thread lift or switch to radiofrequency or ultrasound lifting. Significant weight gain can bring fat back under the chin, so keeping your weight stable helps results last longer. Spending less time looking down at screens also helps keep the neckline in good shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is it uncomfortable to turn my head after a double chin thread lift?

For the first 1–2 weeks you may feel tightness when turning or tilting your head far. This mostly eases as the threads settle into the tissue, and everyday movement is usually not much affected.

Will losing weight get rid of a double chin?

A fat-type double chin often gets smaller with weight loss. A sagging-type double chin, however, remains even after losing weight, and losing weight quickly can make loose skin more noticeable. Sagging that remains after weight loss can be addressed with a thread lift or lifting devices.

Can I get fat-dissolving injections and a thread lift on the same day?

Usually we reduce the fat first with fat-dissolving injections, then decide on a thread lift based on the remaining sagging after the swelling goes down. Doing both on the same day makes the swelling overlap and the result harder to judge.

If I get threads, can I still have other lifting treatments later?

The threads dissolve and are absorbed over time. Radiofrequency or ultrasound lifting can be scheduled once the threads have settled, and the interval is decided during the consultation.
