When Do Swelling and Tightness Settle After a Thread Lift, and Which Symptoms Mean I Should Call the Clinic?
Director Kim Serim ·
After a thread lift, swelling and bruising usually settle within a few days to a week, and tightness when opening the mouth or making expressions eases over 1–2 weeks. On the other hand, pain that keeps getting worse after several days, redness and warmth on one side only, or a thread end showing through or poking out of the skin are rare but need a medical check, so contact the clinic right away.

How does a thread lift lift the facial contour?
A thread lift places medical threads that slowly dissolve in the body into the fat layer under the skin, supporting tissue that has dropped down from above. Cog threads have small barbs on the surface that catch the tissue and move it into place. Smooth mono threads without barbs have little lifting power; instead, they lie in the skin like a mesh and help with firmness.
The threads are made of materials such as PDO (polydioxanone) that are absorbed over several months. While they are absorbed, a mild inflammatory reaction occurs around the threads, and collagen forms as a result, which helps maintain firmness. So a thread lift brings both a change you see as soon as the threads go in and a change that develops over several weeks.
Botox reduces muscle strength, filler adds volume to hollow areas, and radiofrequency or ultrasound devices tighten tissue with heat. A thread lift is different in that it moves the sagging tissue itself. Because an object is placed inside the body, recovery and precautions need a bit more attention than with device-based lifting.
What reactions are common after the procedure, and how long do they last?
Right after a thread lift, swelling, bruising, and a stinging feeling where the needle went in are most common. Swelling is usually most noticeable around day 2 and goes down within about a week. Bruises fade to yellow over 1–2 weeks, depending on their location and size.
A tight or sore feeling in the cheeks and jaw when opening the mouth wide, smiling, or chewing is also common. This comes from the thread barbs settling into the tissue and usually eases within 1–2 weeks.
The skin may look slightly dented along the path of a thread, or the two sides may look a little different early on. This is often caused by swelling going down unevenly, and most cases look natural after a few days. If it stays the same after 1–2 weeks, we check it at the clinic and correct it if needed.
Which rare symptoms mean I should contact the clinic right away?
Infection after a thread lift is uncommon, but if it happens, antibiotics or thread removal may be needed, so it is best to check early. Thread extrusion is more likely when a thread end sits in a shallow layer or in an area with a lot of facial movement, and trimming the visible part usually resolves it.
Numbness or awkward expressions are mostly caused by swelling or temporary nerve irritation and recover over time. Even so, it is safer to have the progress checked at the clinic rather than judging it on your own.
- Pain that does not ease after several days and keeps getting worse
- Red swelling and warmth on one side only, or fluid or pus coming from an entry point
- A thread end showing through or poking out of the skin, or something sharp catching when you touch it
- A dent or asymmetry that stays unchanged for more than 2 weeks
- Awkward movement at the corners of the mouth or numbness that lasts a long time
Should anyone postpone or avoid a thread lift?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, a thread lift is generally postponed until after childbirth and breastfeeding. If there is acne inflammation, herpes, or dermatitis in the treatment area, we also wait until it settles to lower the risk of infection.
If you have a low platelet count or a condition that makes bleeding hard to stop, or if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, bruising and bleeding may be greater. Stopping medicine prescribed for heart or blood vessel conditions on your own is dangerous, so tell us the name of the medicine and we will decide together during the consultation whether and when the procedure is possible. For non-prescription supplements such as omega-3, ginkgo extract, or high-dose vitamin E, we suggest pausing them from one week before the procedure.
Please let us know in advance if you have an autoimmune disease, tend to form keloids, or have had inflammation from threads or filler in the past. If the skin is very thin and sagging is severe, there is a limit to how much threads can hold, and another method may suit you better than a thread lift.
How should I take care of my skin for 2 weeks after the procedure?
The aim of care during this period is to keep the threads, which are still settling, from shifting or their barbs from releasing, and to lower the risk of infection. You can wear light makeup from the day after the entry points have closed.
After 2 weeks, most daily activities can return to normal. Skin keeps aging after a thread lift too, so sun protection and avoiding sudden weight changes help results last longer.
- On the day of the procedure, keep water off the entry points. From the next day, wash your face gently without rubbing.
- For the first 2–3 days, briefly applying a cold pack wrapped in a towel helps with swelling.
- For 2 weeks, skip facial massage, lymphatic massage, gua sha, and other care that presses or pushes on the face.
- For 1–2 weeks, avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, exercise that makes you sweat heavily, and alcohol.
- Sleeping on your back is better than sleeping face down or with one side pressed into the pillow.
- If possible, schedule dental work or anything that keeps your mouth wide open for long until after 2 weeks.
Do recovery and duration differ by thread type?
Yes. Mono threads without barbs are thin and used in larger numbers, but they hold tissue only weakly, so tightness and swelling tend to be relatively mild. Cog threads such as Jamber and MINT catch and lift the tissue, so early tightness may be more noticeable.
Results last roughly 6 months to 1 year depending on the thread material, thickness, barb structure, skin thickness, and degree of sagging, and they vary widely by person. Some of the collagen formed in the meantime remains after the threads fully dissolve. When sagging shows again, we decide at the clinic whether to repeat the thread lift or move on to radiofrequency or ultrasound lifting.
Some people also get Botox or filler on the same day. However, overlapping swelling makes results harder to judge, so the order is sometimes split depending on the treatment areas and amounts.

Frequently asked questions
If there is a problem, can the threads be removed?
If a thread end pokes out or an infection develops, that thread can be removed. Threads that have been in place for a long time and have settled firmly into the tissue can be hard to remove, so it is better to get checked early if something feels wrong.
Can I have an MRI or CT scan after a thread lift?
Dissolvable medical threads are not metal and are known not to affect MRI or CT scans. Telling the imaging team beforehand that you have threads in your face helps with reading the images.
Is it okay if I have work or plans the day after the procedure?
Most people can return to daily life right away. However, swelling and bruising may be most noticeable around day 2, so if you have a photo shoot or an important event, it is best to schedule the procedure with 1–2 weeks to spare.
Is it abnormal if tightness remains after 2 weeks?
Tightness can last a little longer in people who had several cog threads placed or who have a lot of facial movement. If pain is not worsening and there is no redness, we often just monitor it, but if the discomfort continues, we check it at the clinic.
